A long time ago Huerfano County was much larger, stretching from the Arkansas River south to New Mexico and from the Kansas border to the mountains that take up the western sky. But over time it was cut up and portions of the original county became entire new counties. Three more counties were made up of Huerfano County, that does not take away from how beautiful it is and what historical significance it holds to all of the residents there.
